Which Valves for Radiator Do I Need?

Choosing the right radiator valves depends on your pipework layout, pipe size, and how you want to control the temperature in each room.

Step 1 — Check Your Pipework

  • Pipes from the floor: Use straight valves or angled valves.
  • Pipes from the wall: Use angled valves or corner valves for a neater finish.

Step 2 — Check Your Pipe Size

Most UK homes use 15mm pipework. Some older or smaller systems may use 10mm pipes or microbore.

Our radiator valves are 15mm as standard. For 10mm pipes, we offer valves with 10mm to 15mm reducers included, allowing compatibility without modifying your existing pipework.

Types of Radiator Valves

  • Straight Valves: Designed for pipes coming straight up from the floor.
  • Angled Valves (Most Common): Feature a 90° bend, suitable for both floor and wall pipework.
  • Corner Valves: Ideal for pipes coming from the wall, providing a cleaner and more compact finish.

Step 3 — TRV or Manual Valves?

  • Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs): Automatically regulate room temperature and improve energy efficiency. Best suited for living areas and bedrooms.
  • Manual Valves: Simple on/off control that operates like a tap. Best suited for bathrooms and towel radiators where constant heat is desired.

Quick Selection Guide

  • Pipes from the floor: Angled or Straight valves
  • Pipes from the wall: Corner valves (neatest option)
  • Standard pipe size: 15mm valves
  • Smaller pipes (10mm): Use reducers or compatible valves
  • Temperature control: TRV valves
  • Simple setup: Manual valves
