UK Bathroom Zones & IP Safety Requirements
UK Bathroom Zones & Safety Requirements
In the UK, bathrooms are divided into specific zones based on their proximity to water sources. To comply with **BS 7671 (Wiring Regulations)** , your heated towel rail or radiator element must meet the minimum IP rating for its intended location.
| Zone | Location | Minimum IP Rating Required |
|---|---|---|
| Zone 1 | Directly above the bath or shower (up to 2.25m from the floor) | IPX4 (IPX5 is recommended for power showers) |
| Zone 2 | The area stretching 60cm outside the perimeter of the bath or shower | IPX4 |
| Outside Zones | Any area outside Zones 1 and 2 | No specific IP rating required (standard IP20/IP44 is common) |
Installation Requirements
To ensure your electric radiator or towel rail is installed safely and complies with UK building regulations, please note the following key requirements:
- **Qualified Professional:** All electric heating elements must be installed by a **Part P qualified electrician**.
- **Hardwiring:** Elements in a bathroom must be hardwired into a **switched fused spur** located outside the bathroom zones, typically just outside the bathroom door or in an airing cupboard.
- **RCD Protection:** The circuit must be protected by an **RCD (Residual Current Device)** to automatically cut off the power in the event of a fault.
- **Sealing:** Ensure the element is fitted correctly with its rubber O-ring to prevent water leaks and protect the internal electronics.
